The traditional tempo run is entirely different from the typical track type of speed work, a workout that consists of continuous running at a given pace. Tempo runs are longer and generally less intense due to the longer distance, but they have their own valuable benefits that provide critical conditioning as well as mental training needed to perform well at longer race distances.
