A Guide to Running Etiquette

By Debbie Voiles

Etiquette for running on roads, tracks, and in racesThis is not about which fork to use at your running club’s next social or how to make an introduction.

I did, however, go to charm school when I was a teenager; it was called Wendy Warm Charm School. We walked around with books on our heads and learned how to put on lipstick. After the basic class, my mom even enrolled me in the advanced class. I guess I was still a little rough.

No, really, I do know this stuff, not because I learned it in a class but because I’ve been running for 29 years. You pick up a lot in 29  years. Believe, me, taking a few minutes, now, to learn running etiquette, will be appreciated by every other runner you ever know. Make it a point to learn and apply these rules of the running road and to mentor newer runners, which will save them embarrassment and keep everything running smoothly and safely. [Read more…]

MFR 36: Where I’ve Been and What I Do

By Debbie Voiles

I apologize to all Mojo for Running Podcast listeners. I know I’ve been absent for a while, but I’m back and anxious to get caught up on podcasts. Unfortunately, September and February are my busiest months of the year, and as a result, sometimes I get behind on podcasts, but when I am not working on a podcast, I am working with my local coaching clients and the local running club I founded and direct.

In this episode, I want to talk about that club. I’ve been approached several times, lately, by people who would like to start their own coaching business and/or running club; so, I thought I would take this opportunity to give you a bit more insight into what I’m doing as regards my local running business and my club. At a time when membership in many clubs is dwindling, my membership is exploding. If you are thinking about starting a running club, this will give you plenty of information, and even if you are a member of a running club, already, it will likely give you many ideas of ways you can create new opportunities for runners in your group as well as ideas for ways to grow your club.

MFR 33: Running Friends

By Debbie Voiles

This episode is about the value of running friends. It is great if you are intrinsically motivated to get out here and run every day or almost every day, but if you develop a circle of running friends, if you join a running group, you’ll find that you mis fewer runs, get in more miles, do a better jo of sticking to your training schedule; however, none of those is the most important reason to run with a group. In this episode, I explain how I came to join a running group and later start my own club, which now numbers over 350 members, and a Facebook group that as of early 2014 has over 1,900 members.

Running Friends Multiply the Thrill

By Debbie Voiles

Whether you like carrots or not, as a runner you’ll need them, and I don’t mean for their nutritional value.

Do you ever have a day when you just don’t feel like running, a day when your mind tells your body to get up and put your running shoes on, but your body doesn’t cooperate? You need a carrot; in fact, you’ll need a quiver full because that will happen to every runner from time to time.Whether you like carrots or not, as a runner you’ll need them, and I don’t mean for their nutritional value.
